The ink burning in passage at the end reminds me of Deborah Harkness’s novel, A Discovery of Witches.

(But then, she *is* a professor of Early Modern history...)

Somehow I didn't know you had a substack and I'm so glad to have found it in my instagram feed! Such a great post - thanks for sharing your process!

I don't really understand how Substack works...does this mean we will no longer get the Field Notes newsletter in our email? I got here from your link on IG.

Great question. I have migrated my email list over to Substack, so if you were signed up on my website, you still should be receiving an occasional newsletter. I sent one out in August (shadow tracing). If you didn’t get it, perhaps check your spam folder? I like Substack because it acts a bit more like a blog. I can write mini dispatches in between the larger newsletters without having to send out multiple emails and annoying the heck out of my subscribers. As each newsletter comes out, you can then choose to spend more time on my page reading the shorter blog entry posts, or not. Make sense?

Yes! Thanks for the explanation. I did receive the newsletter in August but I made the incorrect assumption that this was a Field Notes newsletter and I hadn't received it in my email. It takes me longer to migrate to new technology these days!

A totally fair assumption. I don't pretend to have it all figured out, and am mostly just muddling through hoping people stay with me in the process. So your comment is great insight for me, thank you.

so inspiring as i am sorting through boxes of bits some of which I haven't seen in 5 years. I do have a box labelled for workshop participants to work with

Go for it and dig into that box! I find I'm much more loose and less "precious" when I re-work materials this way.
